PATRONS
PROJECT

The Patrons of the World’s Children Hospital join people of all faiths around the world in mourning the loss of our Holy Father Pope Francis

Pope Francis provided inspiration and a consistent message of hope, encouraging all of us to stay close to those who suffer and to listen to their voices. The Pope’s Global Alliance for the Health and Humanitarian Care of Children was founded in response to this call. As Pope Francis said, “There are still incurable diseases, but there are no incurable children.” His words will continue to serve as the foundation and guiding light of the important work of the Global Alliance as we build a global network of hospitals and health clinics to provide world-class medical care to children globally and support healthcare workers in the field.

Over the past few years, as President of the Patrons of the World’s Children Hospital, I have had the profound honor of meeting Pope Francis on several occasions. There are truly no words to capture the depth of those encounters, the magnitude of his presence, the solemnity of his words. When the Holy Father entered the room, his presence was not only visible, but deeply felt emotionally.

On one occasion, Pope Francis said to me: “Thank you for what you and the Patrons are doing to help sick children around the world.” I felt humbled, unworthy even of such gracious words.

Our most recent private meeting, in September 2024, was a small audience held for the launch of the Pope’s Global Alliance for the Health and Humanitarian Care of Children. Having met us before, Pope Francis was relaxed, even making light-hearted jokes, revealing his deep humanity, humility, and unwavering care for the causes he holds dear, especially the well-being of children.

It is a great loss.
